If a new floor is on your to-do list, there are plenty of options for you to consider You walk all over it everyday and probably don’t even consider it, but when it’s time to change or pick new flooring it can be a tough decision as you sort through the multitude of options.
“Solid timber, tiles and carpets have been used extensively for flooring, while vinyl and linoleum floors are traditional budget options,” says Donna Hole, head of Trade Service at hipages, the go-to app for Aussies to find and hire a tradie.
“Laminate, concrete, floating and bamboo floors are newer arrivals, but are quickly becoming as common as traditional flooring materials.” Here are a few different types to think about.
Laminate flooring looks like traditional timber flooring, but can be laid over a concrete slab. It comes in either a tile or plank form and is laid over a special underlay that prevents it from moving or squeaking. The laminate is multi-layered, usually with a photorealistic paper layer covered with a tough melamine top layer to give it a polished look and prevent wear.
Concrete flooring is actually quite a stylish flooring material. A polished concrete floor has a beautiful finish and a skilled concrete polishing service can achieve a variety of effects using only concrete and additives.
If you’d like to have solid timber flooring, but can’t have it installed on top of your existing floors, a floating floor is the solution. Floating floors are similar to laminate flooring, but the installation process is a little different. Floating floors often have a layer of real timber laid over a medium density fibreboard base. They come pre-finished in plank form and can be laid over any level surface.
Bamboo is known for its tough fibres, but until recently was not suitable for use as a flooring material. New technologies have made bamboo a popular alternative to timber or timber laminate flooring. It can have the pale blonde appearance of natural bamboo or look like other timbers. Choosing the best flooring for your home can be more confusing, but the greater number of options also means you can have a stunning looking floor no matter what your budget is.
